About Reiki
What is Reiki?
The word ‘Reiki’ is Japanese, which can be translated as ‘Universal life-force energy’. The word is divided into two parts:
Rei - this means universal. It is translated as ‘the wisdom and knowledge of all the Universe’. This means a higher source that understands all, the cause of all problems and difficulties and how to heal them. It is important to mention that Reiki is not affliliated to any religion and is not dependent on any belief system, or absence of one, in order for it to work. It is an all-knowing, loving consciousness. In fact, many Reiki Practitioners believe that Reiki symbolises pure love.
Ki - this is the vital life energy that circulates through and around all living (and non-living) things.
The knowledge that an unseen energy runs through all living things and is connected directly to the quality of life has been part of the wisdom of many cultures and belief systems for thousands of years. The Chinese call it Chi for example. The existence of this ‘life force energy’ has been verified by recent scientific experiments with much research still taking place. Many Medical Doctors are now considering the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process. Many hospitals in the UK and the US are now employing Complementary Therapists, including Reiki Practitioners or refer people onto such therapists.
Simply put, Reiki energy helps to rebalance and unblock one’s energy systems therefore making it easier for body and mind to heal itself.
It should be noted, however, that Reiki Practitioners, like all other Complementary Therapists, do not claim to cure and do not suggest that Reiki should be a substitute for traditional medical treatments. One should always seek the medical advice of their GP and continue, as directed by their GP, with any medications they are currently taking. However, Reiki may enhance and complement the effectiveness of traditional medicine.

Where does Reiki come from?
The ancient art of hands-on healing is thought to have originated as a Tibetan practise thousands of years ago. It was rediscovered by a Japanese scholar, Dr Usui, in the mid 1800′s and eventually brought to the west in the 1930′s by a woman named Mrs Takata.
All healers use Ki energy but not all use Reiki. Reiki is a unique life force energy, available to only those who have been attuned to it. Healers who have not been attuned to Reiki are often drawing on their own personal resevoir of Ki so leaving them vulnerable to illness should their reserves run low. The beauty of Reiki is that the Ki energy emanates from Rei, that is, Reiki is a spiritually guided Life Force Energy.
Reiki heals by using the Universal Life Force Energy. It is based on the idea that an unseen life force energy runs through us and is what causes us to be alive. If ones life force energy is low then we are more prone to becoming sick or feeling stressed and blockages or restrictions can occur in the flow of Ki. When it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The Ki flows freely, a vitality exudes one’s being and there is harmony on all levels.
